David H. Silber
In my off hours, I enjoy reading, dancing, working with community theaters, and providing theatrical tech for science fiction conventions.
I have designed and implented lighting for a several stage productions, and while I'm not formally trained, I must be doing something right to have been nominated for a WATCH award for my work on Bedroom Farce at the Silver Spring Stage (2004).
As part of a team of mostly amateur theater techs supporting large events for east coast science fiction conventions, I sometimes design, sometimes lead a part of the work, sometimes run the whole show, and sometimes simply work for whoever has taken on the job -- it is not about the ego, it is about building as a team something that none of us could build on our own.
The SF convention tech generally involves building a theater into a hotel ballroom, running one to three major events and a bunch of smaller events, then tearing it all down and packing it away, all in the space of a weekend.
